Larnell Lewis learned most of Snarky Puppy's We Like It Here on a flight before recording the album!

Snarky Puppy's We Like It Here is one of the most influential jazz fusion albums of the last decade. This is clear from the views and praises in the Youtube vide of the album's crown jewel, "Lingus", especially towards Cory Henry's baffling synth solo. But what is just as baffling about this album is the sheer talent and dedication of the drummer Larnell Lewis.

Believe it or not, he learned all the intricate parts and little details of the music, with the exception of two songs, in a 7 and a half hour flight on his way to Europe, to record the actual album. Michael League explains it in an interview with the Happy magazine:

"We had a travel issue with one of our drummers the week of recording for the album We Like It Here in Holland. It looked like he wouldn’t make it, so we called a drummer from Canada named Larnell Lewis to see if he could come play at the last minute. He had done 2 or 3 gigs with us, but almost all of the material for the record was new. He agreed, got on a plane two days later, learned all of the music on the flight, and landed the day of the recording session. He knew the music better than we did. It was unbelievable. Then he joined the band as one of our three steady drummers."

So he not only saved the day, but also gave us some of the best grooves you've probably ever heard and earned his rightfully deserved place in the Snarky Puppy's lineup :)
